Funding Challenges for Texas Public Schools

In the third installment of our Across the Lawn event series, our panel discussion will include Hawley ISD Superintendent Dr. Cassidy McBrayer, TASBO Associate Executive Director of Policy and Research Amanda Brownson, and Longview ISD Board of Trustee Ted Beard. Each brings a unique perspective to the discussion including the different dimensions and considerations needed in school budgeting and funding -- from balancing teacher retention bonuses with salary increases, to general facility needs like updating HVAC units on campuses to spikes in property insurance costs, and other timely issues.

Raise Your Hand Texas' Senior Director of Policy Bob Popinski will moderate the panel as they examine why Texas ranks 42nd in the nation in per-pupil spending, how statewide policies impact the funding formulas resulting in this low rating, how superintendents' meet the challenge of budgeting for all their unique needs, and more.

With a significant budget surplus facing the state legislature heading into the next session, could our public schools receive a much-needed boost in funding? What would that look like?  And is there a sustainable solution versus a short-time fix?

The Across the Lawn Event Series is building upon the momentum of our Texas Voices campaign and the success of our January 2022 Measure What Matters conference.

These events will take place on the last Thursday of each month throughout the year. All event recordings will also be available On Demand.

Policy-makers, educators, and community members are invited to discuss issues that will create a stronger, more innovative school system. The events will bring together experts, researchers, policymakers, and communities. All of these conversations and interactions will culminate in a series of legislative recommendations for the 2023 legislative session. Will look forward to seeing you at each event.
